Try to solve this puzzle.

Keep your brain active and think about it:

If...

4 + 9 = 52
6 + 7 = 78
8 + 4 = 96
9 + 4 = 117

Then:

9 + 7 = ????

Well I don't have an answer but it seems the crux of the problem is understanding what is represented by the numbers on the left hand side of the equation since conventionally 4 + 9 = 13 not 52 so if this were an exam question the equation would be written thus:

4x + 9x = 52

It is possible to derive the solution by trial and error. As much as I wish I understood calculus I don't so I don't know if this can be solved any other way.

Anyway the upshot is I know the answer.

Edit: I didn't have an answer when I started to write my reply but by the time I finished I did.

It is simple really, the equation was what you had to actually figure out.
They do look somewhat stupid answers however once you have figured out the formula it makes sense

4 + 9 = 52, formula is 4 + 9 = 13 x first number (4) = 52

therefore

9 + 7 = 144 As Silverback says 9 + 7 = 16 x 9 = 144

well i don't understand it either but i just can't be bothered!

Okay the formula is

Take the first number and add it to the second number, take the answer to this and multiply it by the first number again.

4 + 9 = 52 (4 + 9 = 13 * 4 = 52) - 4 was the first number
6 + 7 = 78 (6 + 7 = 13 * 6 = 78) - 6 was the first number
8 + 4 = 96 (8 + 4 = 12 * 8 = 96) - 8 was the first number
9 + 4 = 117 (9 + 4 = 16 * 9 = 144) - 9 was the first number

The whole idea was to work out the pattern, and where mathmatics are involved, there is nearly always a pattern
