Interesting one this. Obviously no one can defend Huntley's previous actions which led to him being imprisoned, but he has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, not imprisonment with optional throat cutting if some other person, who let's remember is such a good egg that they are imprisoned with Ian Huntley, decides that Huntley's crime was so much worse than the one they committted that in a fit of public spiritedness/enlightenment recognises that the whole judicial system (a system which has evolved over a thousand years) got it wrong and then decides to right this wrong by cutting Huntley's throat. Presumably he then turned the razor blade on himself for the exact same reasons that he attacked Huntley.

The question is should prison inmates have the same rights as Joe Public? Prison is now viewed as a rehabilitation rather than a punishment sentence. Most criminals don't view prison as a deterent so therefore freely commit crime. If the death penalty was re introduced for serious crimes and constant offenders would this act as a deterent? If the criminal is mentaly unstable or suffers with serious mental illness (as probably with Huntley) the death penalty would not act as a deterent as many psycho and sociopaths don't fear death and are unafraid to die. If a criminal is beyond rehabilitation what is the answer?

the problem is, whilst in jail they are supposed to be protected from Attack. If this attack had happened to any other prsioner, say a burgular, it would have only warrented a tiny paragraph on about page 12 of the paper. Because it's Huntley, probably one of the most hated people in the country, people instantly say he deserves it, and i my opinion he does. But should rules on protection be different for different criminals? Well no. In this day and age the death penelty will never be brought back which is a shame really. And your never going to get to the point where inmates have no protection and are free to attack each other. So no matter how morally it is for Huntley to sue, he does have the right.

Read yesterday that Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, is challenging the decision to never release him. I wonder where he got that idea from? :x

Also, one of Damilola Taylor's killers is set to be released, after only serving 4 years (I believe). Brilliant justice system we have....

It's the same right to appeal as afforded for those who believe they have been wrongly convicted I'm afraid... if it's there for one, it has to be there for all.

It's also based upon a set of principles which (and I'm sure WKD would let me know otherwise if I've misread) that were founded and upheld, interestingly under Tory governments.... so let's put the 'let's blame the last government' argument to bed now shall we?

Without getting into political details, because I can't be bothered (!), quite why Sutcliffe and Huntley would WANT to be released is beyond me - they should be, and would be (surely), in fear for their lives!
They are safer in bloody prison!

I think both might disagree with you there Alan. Sutcliffe has also been viciously attacked, at least once and probably many times, (blinded in one eye I think).

Aye, Sutcliffe's appeal is actually the level of psychiatric security he is under... ironically his issue is that he feels it is unsafe and he's with 'mad people'...

He knows that because the voices in his head keep telling him.

I couldn't care less to be honest - they deserve anything and everything they get along those lines. Nuff said.

So are you saying that once convicted by true and fair jury and sentenced by true and fair judge  no-one should have the right of appeal?
